2022 CEIU National Human Rights/Race Relations Conference – Vancouver, BC

The conference was held in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia – September 23 to 25th. It started off with a special performance by a Vancouver’s drag queen – Carlotta Gurl the evening of our arrival. Commencing the conference with a beautiful Aboriginal opening ceremony, followed by caucuses for all equity groups. The conference brought us various guest speakers that delivered amazing content surrounding lived experiences of residential school, colonialism, disability, ableism to name a few.

The delegation passed 18 resolutions with only one ruled out of order. If you want to know the details of the resolutions, please reach out to: localceiu581@gmail.com.

Elections for next term (September 2023) were set, our very own Thu Trinh was nominated but lost with a few votes behind. Thu represented Ontario proudly, honoured for the on the floor nominations and was not at all discouraged as she will be running for an alternate position on the CEIU National Human Rights/Race Relations Committee.

In case you missed the updates >>>> Common issues: Facing record inflation, government’s latest wage offer still sets workers back

September 26, 2022

After two weeks of mediation at the Common Issues table, the federal government put forward a revised wage offer on the last day of talks that would still see more than 120,000 federal public service workers take what amounts to a significant pay cut in the face of record high inflation.

Mediation took place September 12-14 and 20-23 between PSAC’s Common Issues bargaining team and Treasury Board.

The revised offer of 1.5%, 3.0%, 2.0%, and 1.75% — averaging 2.06% per year over a four-year agreement — still falls well short of inflation and shows the government still has no real mandate to negotiate a reasonable contract with our members. The original offer of 1.5%, 2%, 1.75%, and 1.5% — averaging 1.7% per year — led PSAC to declare impasse in May.

As the cost of living continues to soar, PSAC members expect Treasury Board to come to the table with a fair contract that will protect workers’ buying power and prevent them from falling further behind. But this latest wage offer is just disrespectful and proves Treasury Board isn’t taking this seriously.

Treasury Board also dug in their heels and refused to meaningfully budge on any of the other key issues that matter most to members, including contracting out and better job securityequity in the workplace, and more work-life balance.

PSAC will now bring those issues to the forefront at Public Interest Commission hearings, to be scheduled this fall by the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board.

Meanwhile, dates have been set for mediation for the PA, SV, TC and EB groups.

  • PA: October 4-7
  • SV: October 11-14
  • TC: October 18-21
  • EB: October 25-27

If an agreement with the government following the Public Interest Commission process can’t be reached, PSAC members should be prepared to escalate their actions, up to and including taking strike action if necessary to reach a fair contract.

Stay informed and engaged

Getting involved and taking action are key as we push for a fair contract. Be prepared, get mobilized, stay engaged, and be ready to take action:

Union dues change takes effect in September | Public Service Alliance of Canada

September 2, 2022

At PSAC’s national convention this year, members worked together to pass a progressive budget, and several resolutions, to build on the important work of our union in bargaining, organizing, human rights and mobilization.

As a result, PSAC members approved a small dues increase of 0.17$ per month per member starting September 1 to fund the ongoing work of our union on the issues that matter most to workers. This change reflects an increase in the dues rate to 0.9593% from 0.9557% as a percentage of PSAC members’ salary.

This change will help PSAC continue its critical work of negotiating fair wages that keep up with the rising cost of living, supporting members in the workplace, fighting to dismantle systemic racism and harassment, and funding a national triennial young workers’ conference.

To learn more about this dues rate change and how to calculate your union dues, you can check out our breakdown of PSAC’s union dues and our frequently asked questions.

Northern components use a different dues structure. For more details, please contact your component representative with the Yukon Employees Union, the Union of Northern Workers or the Nunavut Employees Union.

Labour Day Event Invitation- September 5th at 12PM

Greetings Members!

PSAC London Area Council and the London and District Labour Council is proud to invite you to a family friendly Labour Day event:

Monday, September 05, 2022 from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM Springbank Park Site F1085 Commissioners Road West
It has been a challenging time for workers, unions, and communities.  The labour movement in Ontario has fought hard against the unprecedented attacks on workers’ rights, and to ensure the health and safety measures required to keep workers and families safe.  Labour Day plays a critical moment in our movement’s calendar. It represents the coming together of workers to celebrate our collective victories and to continue to advance our efforts to improve the lives of all workers and communities.

The global pandemic has shone a harsh light on society’s inequalities which the labour movement has long fought to address. Our Labour Day 2022 theme is “Forward Together: This is our moment”.
