PSAC UNION EDUCATION COURSE: Racism and Our Labour Movement

UNION EDUCATION COURSE: Racism and Our Labour Movement In this two-day course, members will review key moments and often forgotten histories of racial exclusion in Canada’s labour movement. Members will explore contemporary manifestations of anti-Black racism and racism in the labour market and our labour movement. We will reflect on how the persistence of such racism impacts racialized workers and their communities and also undermines our collective capacity to advance social democracy, social justice and economic liberation of the working class. To win for workers we must build solidarity through racial justice. Participants will discuss how racialized trade unionists can organize and mobilize to advance racial justice and how white/non-racialized trade unionists can support, be allies and collaborators in efforts for racial justice. Participants will be connected to important groups and initiatives advancing racial justice at various levels and make an action plan for themselves on advancing the work of racial justice in their own life, in their union, and in society at large. Racism and Our Labour Movement is an Introductory (Basic) course with no pre-requisite.September 22-23 | Sunday + Monday | 9:30am – 4:30pmLocation: PSAC London Regional Office – 244 Pall Mall StreetRegistration Link: https://ontario.psac.com/courses/london-ro-racism-and-our-labour-movement-in-person-sept-22-23-2024/Registration Deadline: August 30, 2024

Message from new CEIU PRESIDENT

The strength of the Canadian Employment and Immigration Union (CEIU) is our members. I am proud to serve as the new National President of CEIU and I look forward to connecting with members across the country.

My priorities for the near-term are fighting for fair telework rights and empowering members through union education. Some members don’t know how to access their union or how we can help, and that needs to change.

I’m excited to announce that Rubina Boucher was elected National Executive Vice-President and Helen King was voted in as Alternate National Executive Vice-President this week. I’d like to congratulate them both. These positions were voted on by the National Executive in accordance with the CEIU Bylaws. We now have a full executive to support our members.

Preparations are underway for our first National Young Workers Conference and our first National Health and Safety Conference, both taking place this September.

Education is a core part of CEIU’s work, so I’m pleased to remind you that the deadline for our National Scholarships is Aug. 30. You can find more information here.

The CEIU National Executive and I would love to hear from you, so please don’t hesitate to contact us. See our contact info here.

Wishing you and yours a wonderful summer!

In solidarity,

Phil Matheson

Changes in CEIU Leadership – Changements à la direction du SEIC

**le français suit**

MESSAGE TO CEIU LOCALS & MEMBERS

Greetings,

This email is to provide you with an update on your Component, the Canada Employment and Immigration Union (CEIU).

On June 28, 2024, PSAC’s National Board of Directors (NBoD) suspended Eddy Bourque and Sargy Chima from membership in PSAC. This means that they have been removed from their positions as CEIU National President and National Executive Vice-President, effective immediately. This decision was taken as a result of a disciplinary investigation process, which concluded with the NBoD’s decisions in this matter.

Phil Matheson is the new CEIU National President; his contact information is: mathesonp@ceiu-seic.ca

Elections for CEIU National Executive Vice-President and Alternate National Executive Vice-President will be conducted as soon as possible, in accordance with the CEIU Bylaws.

I want to stress that CEIU is not in trusteeship, nor in administration. CEIU Bylaws remain in force. The remainder of the CEIU National Executive continue to serve in their elected positions. Local leadership remains in place. The Component continues to provide service and representation to CEIU members.

PSAC is supporting CEIU through this transition process. I look forward to the cooperation and solidarity of CEIU leadership and membership as we work to uphold the leadership capacity of CEIU.

I recognize that you will have questions and concerns as to what this transition means for you and your local. Maintaining service and representation to CEIU members remains our priority. The operations of CEIU shall continue during this period, and PSAC remains dedicated to working with CEIU members and staff to uphold the responsibilities of CEIU.

If there are any urgent matters that need to be addressed within the coming days, please contact: mathesonp@ceiu-seic.ca

Further information, including on the upcoming election process, will be shared with locals as it becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We will work through this period together.

In solidarity,

Sharon DeSousa

PSAC National President

MESSAGE AUX SECTIONS LOCALES ET AUX MEMBRES DU SEIC

Salutations,

Sharon DeSousa
